Sources of Pollution: Construction Runoff

Construction runoff occurs where people are building.  It happens in both rural and urban areas.  It is a particular problem in urban areas because more buildings mean more pollution.

How does this land use cause Non-Point Source Pollution?

Before buildings can be built land must be cleared of trees and plants.  Any time this is done, the soil is loosened.  This just means that the roots and organic matter that hold soil together have been scraped off. The next rain washes soil, organic matter, oil, grease, and metals into the nearest bayou with rainfall runoff.

What can you do to prevent this pollution?
